Shake Your Glass use it to create a selection of glass pendants and earrings that will make you feel glamorous. Dichroic (pronounced dye-crow-ick) glass is fondly referred to as “dichro“. It is a colour shifting glass that appears different colours when held at different angles. The dichroic coating reflects particularly vibrant colours hence making it so popular for accessories.
What is Dichroic Glass?
The technique for creating this fabulous layer of magic on glass is a highly technical process. Carried out in a vacuum chamber some colours will have as many as 30 layers of quartz and metal oxide. The micro layers of metals can include titanium, chromium, aluminium, gold and zirconium. These are vaporised and condensed to form a crystal structure. The coating produced has been referred to as being characteristic of a gemstone – maybe this is why it is often mistaken as such.
Originally designed by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for use on satellites and space shuttles it is now also commercially made for the use of glass jewellery and art.

What to expect?
Expect to see amazing depth in my dichroic work. I have experimented with the glass in the kiln uncovered to give a matt look and covered with clear glass to give a gloss finish.
